MEMernet: Polar Bears, a Geenline Van, and Those TBI Alerts

Memphis on the internet.

Tweet of the Week

“Zoos are really insane as hell. Ain’t no way a polar bear supposed to be in Memphis, Tennessee,” tweeted @galeonsworld last week.

Van Life

Last week three people stole a minivan and attempted to drive it across the V&E Greenline bridge.

They didn’t make it far. The bridge is fine, Greenline officials said on Nextdoor last week. But the handrail is not. Damage from a collision with the van will likely cost $5,000, they said.

“Unfortunately, while this particular incident is unusual, we have seen more and more motorized vehicles using the trail for criminal and recreational purposes,” Greenline officials said.

“No One Easy Answer”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) apologized for the many alerts that buzzed the phones of Tennesseans at all hours last week.

“We know it’s been a frustrating morning for many of you,” the TBI tweeted. “Same here, TBH.”

Why? “There is no one easy answer,” the TBI said in a statement. The agency doesn’t send the alerts, a partner does. The alerts also vary across cell providers, change with movements across the state, change with powering a phone on and off, signal strength, wifi availability, and more.

MEMernet: Kids, Finch, and Delta, Delta, Delta

Memphis on the internet.

Kids not alright

Call them the “Blue Kids” or the “Big Kids,” but one of those big blue statues on the Vollintine-Evergreen Greenline was vandalized — partially burned — last week.

An eyewitness said they spotted two people near the statues last Monday morning. Investigators said an accelerant — probably lighter fluid — was used to start the fire.

Finally Finch

“Work on the Larry Finch Plaza will be completed this fall,” tweeted University of Memphis President David Rudd. “Here’s what it’ll look like (and that’s not the statue just a place holder!).”

Delta, Delta, Delta

The Memphis subreddit roasted this year’s Delta Fair, especially as the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus sweeps across the land.

“More true than ever this year,” wrote original poster u/trailsonmountains.

“Truth in advertising,” wrote u/MatttheBruinsfan. “They should have set it up in a hospital parking lot instead.”

“One of the 901 Day events is called Exposure,” said u/scd73. “Terrible choice.”

Shroomin’: Wanna Learn Some Fungi Facts?

Here’s something useful. Learn all about the science of mycology. Sounds boring. What is mycology and why do you want to know about it? Mycology is a branch of biology dealing with fungi. Still confused? It’s all about the ‘shrooms, man.

A friend who goes faithfully to the Memphis Farmers Market every Saturday and buys from the Bluff City Fungi vendor says she has a theory: that mushrooms are not really poisonous, they just tell you that because some are psychedelic. She tells me this as she picks a little umbrella-looking mushroom off the ground and pops it in her mouth. “Now we just wait and see if it’s one of those poisonous mushrooms,” she says.

Looking to learn some fungi facts?

Meanwhile, I feverishly start googling mushroom identification websites with 911 on standby. My friend is (sometimes hazardously) obsessed with mushrooms for cooking as well as medicinal uses. Wouldn’t it be great to know the facts about mushrooms? Why yes, it would. Take a trip to the grassy park on the Vollintine-Evergreen Greenline at N. Auburndale this Sunday and listen to the experts with facts, not theories. Connect with like-minded people and learn about the ecosystem.

The class will explore two fungi that are in season and growing in our region. Learn the common name, the Latin name, identifying characteristics, how to forage, harvest, or grow, medicinal qualities, recipes, and more.

Mycology Class, Vollintine-Evergreen Greenline at N. Auburndale, 673 N. Auburndale, Sunday, Oct. 25, 2 p.m., free.
