Volunteer Memphis’ MLK Days of Service

Volunteer Memphis kicks off its annual MLK Days of Service this Thursday, January 11th. The event that encourages Memphis to “care like King” will take place from Thursday through Monday, January 15th, with the goal to complete more than 5.000 hours of service across the Mid-South.

“It’s five days to recognize Dr. King,” says Reggie Crenshaw, president and CEO of Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis. “And as he said, ‘everybody can be great because everybody can serve.’ I just believe that that is such an important thing for where our community is right now. And being a person who can get out and serve our community is really important. Annually, we have about 300,000 people who volunteer. During last year’s MLK Days of Service, we generated about 6000 hours worth of volunteerism. We had 1200 people that participated.”

Thursday’s event is a VIP reception, but the following days are open to the public, with volunteer opportunities available on Volunteer Memphis’ website according to each day’s theme. Friday is Youth and Education Day, Saturday is Health and Wellness, Sunday is Service Sunday, and Monday is Community Cleanup. For those who are not able to attend any of the volunteer opportunities listed, Volunteer Memphis also has virtual and DIY opportunities, like making care packages for those experiencing homelessness or writing thank you notes for essential workers. “There’s huge opportunities for us to get involved and get engaged,” Crenshaw says. “It’s just taking the time just to do it.”

For Saturday’s Health and Wellness Day, Crenshaw says, Volunteer Memphis will host two community fairs, one at the Orange Mound Community Center at 10 a.m. to noon and the other at the Hollywood Community Center from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The fairs will have vendors with free vaccines, free diaper and baby item distributions provided by Bare Needs Diaper Bank, information about joining the Healthier 901 movement, health information, games, and a live DJ from 10 a.m. to noon. The fair at the Orange Mound Community Center will also have food distributions provided by the Mid-South Food Bank. Both fairs need volunteers.

“Generally nationally [organizations] only recognize MLK Service Day for one day,” Crenshaw says. “Right but we do it for five days. The need is so great. Last year we had 93 volunteer projects, and we’re hoping to move towards a much higher number of volunteer projects. So, you know, just trying to do it for one day does our community a disservice. And what we do is get people engaged and volunteer like this yearlong, not just waiting until this time of year.”

At this, Crenshaw remarks that Volunteer Memphis has 480 agencies in their portal and 30,000 registered volunteers. “This year, we’re actively participating in eight counties in West Tennessee and in six counties outside of West Tennessee,” he adds.

Care Like King: Join MLK Days of Service Beginning Jan. 14

This coming January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. would have been 92 years old. Though his life was tragically cut short, his legacy lives on through service for others and the community.

“Doctor King said, ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?'” says Andrea Hill, director of Volunteer Memphis. “MLK Days of Service asks people to ‘Care Like King’ and volunteer to help themselves and their communities through service.”

MLK Days of Service volunteers

Those who would like to participate in MLK Days of Service can choose to volunteer during this King birthday week in a myriad of ways through a plethora of organizations. Visit the Volunteer Memphis website for a listing of available opportunities. Everything from outdoor cleanups to virtual webinars designed to educate people on financial literacy, leadership skills, and much more will be available to honor King’s legacy. Last year, volunteers completed more than 5,000 hours of service across 10 Mid-South counties for MLK Days of Service. This year, our community can lead the way to exceed that number.

If service is beneath you, leadership is beyond you. King was a great leader because of his dedication to serving others.

“Everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service,” said King. “You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.”

It’s time for us all to be great and care like King.

Memphis Margarita Festival and Tamale Festival Saturday

Is there anything better than a pitcher of margaritas and a pile of handmade tamales, piping hot inside their corn husks? If your answer to that question was anything other than “all of that and a rack of ribs,” you’re wrong. That’s why a pair of dueling festivals, both being held this Saturday, will present right-thinking Memphians with something of a dilemma. They will be forced to choose between tamales at the Latino Cultural Center’s first Tamale Festival at Caritas Village or margaritas at the Memphis Flyer‘s first Margarita Festival on the Greensward in Overton Park. Or maybe, since they’re both in Midtown, folks can figure out a way to have a little taste of one and a little sip of the other.

“The heart of our festival is the tamale competition,” Tamale Fest spokesperson Kristin Fox-Trautman says. “We have 10 teams headed by experts who’ve learned to make tamales or who have old family recipes that have been passed down for generations.” Samples of the competition tamales will be available, and there will be plenty of Mexican and Delta-style tamales for sale. “I’ve been a volunteer with Latino Cultural Center for a couple of years,” Fox-Trautman says. “When we got ready to grow our efforts, someone joked and said a hot dog festival would be perfect. Everybody loves hot dogs. But the tamale has a special place in so many Latino cultures. And even here in the South with the Delta tamale. And the corn dog!” Burritos, tacos, paletas, and funnel cakes will also be available for purchase. And hot dogs. General admission is $5 and includes two tamale tastes.

Tickets to the Memphis Flyer Margarita Festival include 15 margarita samples. Margarita mixologists will be competing on behalf of restaurants like Babalu, Swanky’s, Happy Mexican, Molly’s, Agave Maria, and many more. Proceeds from the event go to Leadership Memphis’ program, Volunteer Memphis.
