If Tennessee lawmakers have their way, the Bible may soon be the official state book.
Committees in both the Senate and House approved a bill to make the Christian text the book of Tennessee. In the Senate committee, no lawmakers voted against the bill, two abstained, and seven voted in favor of the measure. In the House, the bill was approved by voice vote.
Even some Christians have come out against the bill. According to the Tennessean, Michael Williams, a pastor at West End United Methodist Church in Nashville, spoke out about his concern that the measure actually demeans the Bible. Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville) shares Williams’ concern.
