With every index, anecdotal or scientific, indicating that the mayoral race between the two presumed frontrunners, incumbent Mayor A C Wharton and City Councilman Jim Strickland, is neck-and-neck, both candidates are reaching down deep for the stretch drive.
Both held fundraising events Wednesday afternoon. The Mayor’s was in Nashville, where he was the beneficiary of a $500-a head affair hosted by Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, former Governor Phil Bredesen, and 5th District congressman Jim Cooper (left). The day before, on the morning before an evening debate between the two candidates, along with another candidate, Councilman Harold Collins, Wharton held a press conference to announce support from a group of local officials. Meanwhile, Strickland was not being idle. He spend his Wednesday afternoon at Memphis Waterworks in Midtown, with a packed house of supporters and a fundraiser of his own.
Strickland (below) was introduced to the crowd by Joy Touliatos (left) one of his campaign co-hosts.
