The Boston Herald recently sounded an irony alert. The Herald claims that senator and presidential hopeful John Kerry jumped on Senator Rick Santorum for making anti-gay remarks only a few days after accepting the endorsement of former Senator Alex Sanders, who once slammed former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani for “rooming with two gay men.” In a related story, Congressman Harold Ford Jr., a 32-year-old bachelor, has pledged his support for Kerry by making the curious comment, “If I have to get married to help him, I’ll help him.” As a conservative Democrat known to pal around with even more conservative types, could it be that the always dapper, consummately color-coordinated but presumably heterosexual Ford sees some political advantage in at least looking less gay?
