Among the last 10 Memphis football coaches — dating back to 1958, when Billy Murphy was hired — only one began his Tiger career with a victory.

Rey Dempsey opened his Memphis career with a 17-2 home win over Arkansas State on September 1, 1984. This was the first Tiger game, of course, since the plane crash that killed coach Rex Dockery after the 1983 season. The ’84 Tigers finished with a record of 5-5-1.
