Democratic New York Representative Anthony Weiner is known for glibly spouting off on camera, most notably as a liberal foil for Fox News and on his pal Jon Stewart’s Daily Show. Today Rep. Weiner appears to have joined the long list of male idiots who think that the Internet is a great place to sexy-text or post lewd pictures of themselves. Do these people not watch the news? Have they not noticed what happened to Tiger Woods? Or Bret Favre? Or any of a number of other notables who couldn’t keep their, um, weiners, to themselves?
Guys, if you put it on the Internet, if you text it, if you Tweet it, if you email it, it will show up somewhere, sometime. If you’re famous, you will be outed, guaranteed. Heck, with the powers the government now has through the “Patriot Act,” there’s a good chance some bureaucrat with an ax to grind is keeping an eye on your communications, just hoping for such an opportunity. One leak to an opposing blogger or media outlet, and you’re toast, Leno material. And if your name happens to be Weiner, well, so much the worse for you, pal.
So now, Anthony Weiner joins the crowd of embarrassed men who have had to do the march of shame — in front of cameras in public, and with their pissed-off and humiliated wives and children at home. It seems to be the eternal lesson unlearned — one that affects powerful men of both parties. Maybe they can start a support group: Friends of Weiner.
