The Memphis Flyer welcomes back former staff writer Maya Smith, who now will fill the role of senior news reporter.
Smith left the Flyer last year to continue her education in Washington, D.C., earning a Masters of Communications from American University with a focus on investigative journalism. She also worked with The Washington Post during her time in Washington, contributing to articles on litigation related to the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol riot.
In her previous time with the Flyer, Smith reported on transportation, health and fitness, city and county government, and more, as well as contributing multiple cover features and to the Last Word opinion column. She also racked up wins in both the Green Eyeshade Awards and AAN Awards. The awards, while they attest to the high quality of her reporting, serve to proclaim something those familiar with her byline already know — she exhibits a strong knowledge of Memphis, and a commitment to accurately reporting on the issues that most affect Memphians.
