WHAT’S IN A NICKNAME I

Jerry Green, a sports columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, thinks that the NBA is clueless when it comes to choosing nicknames for development teams. And he has a point. The Asheville Altitude just doesn t work. The Greenville Groove is more than a little bit silly. The Mobile Revellers will no doubt party too hard to play good ball, and as for the North Charleston Lowgaters all we can say is Huh? But when it comes to assessing the names of other sports farm leagues it seems to be Mr. Green who is, in fact, clueless. Oh sure, the Scottsdale Artichokes don t sound very intimidating, the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs is just a disgusting moniker, and the tasteless Macon Whoopee speaks for itself. Unfortunately for Mr. Green, The Memphis Chicks (his 10th favorite team name on a list he professes to update yearly) aren t around anymore. Go Redbirds!
