Memphis bikes are getting a nod from The White House.
Kyle Wagenschutz, the city’s bicycle and pedestrian program manager, will be honored in Washington during a Champions of Change event. The Champions program brings leaders from across the country to The White House to share their ideas.
“All across the country, ordinary Americans are doing extraordinary things in their communities to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world,” reads the Champions website.
Wagenschutz is now featured on the Champions site, which says he helped establish Memphis as a national leader on bicycle and pedestrian programs. He helped develop the city’s first bicycle master plan, which helped the city secure more than 100 miles of new bike lanes.
“Kyle’s leadership and innovation on this issue has led to national recognition for the city’s efforts, making Memphis a role model for other cities to follow when developing their own biking and walking programs,” Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said in a statement.
More than 140 miles of new bicycle infrastructure is now under design and is expected to be completed by 2017.
Wagenschutz will be recognized at The White House by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and participate in a panel discussion highlighting the city’s efforts to advance transportation.
