A $650,000 grant from the federal government will help the Memphis Zoo renovate its Herpatarium, home of the zoo’s turtles, snakes, and frogs.

The grant award was announced Monday and was one of two from the national Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Ornamental Metal Museum also won a grant for $26,000 to digitize its archives.

A zoo official said she wasn’t sure exactly what changes will come for the Herpatarium but said the building has not been changed since it was originally built in 1960.
