Grizzlies 106, Clippers 91 Post-Game Three-Pointer

The Grizzlies won their second game in a row with a 15-point victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. What I saw at the Forum:

1. Bench Play: I wrote in my pre-game post that I would be interested to see how the team’s three rookies faired tonight, and that getting solid contributions from DeMarre Carroll and/or Sam Young would be a key to victory. Well, all three rookies gave the team good minutes tonight.

Carroll had 10 points (4-6 shooting) and 5 rebounds in 20 minutes and made some of the energy plays that are key to his game: Stepping up to take a charge from a rumbling Craig Smith, following his own miss for an offensive rebound, finishing plays around the rim off setups from teammates.

Young played 12 minutes and was an efficient scorer with 6 points on 3-6 shooting. He missed a dunk off a terrific Marc Gasol feed, but made a Tim Duncan-esqe mid-range bank shot that I’m almost certain was intentional. After shooting an abysmal 5-24 over the previous four games, Young has gone 10-17 in this two-game win “streak.” And I think that’s far from an accidental correlation.

As for Thabeet, he came back from injury to give the team respectable back-up center minutes: 4 points (2-4 shooting) and 4 rebounds in 11 minutes with a nice weakside block on an Al Thornton drive. Thabeet’s complete lack of fluidity on the offensive end is discouraging — he scored his first basket on an alleged baseline jump hook that was more like a flukish jump “push” and one offensive rebound that should have been a putback dunk came up dry as he was unable to gather himself to get back off the floor in time. But we all know now that we aren’t judging Thabeet by typically #2 pick standards: He needs to become the next Joel Pryzbilla before he can start thinking about being a poor man’s Mutombo. Thabeet’s rookie season is about baby steps, and he took one tonight.

Overall, the Grizzlies got 31 points from a group of bench players who had averaged a collective 17.2 coming into tonight.

Grizzlies-Clippers Game Post

Alright, I’m courtside at FedExForum where the Grizzlies will host the Clippers in an attempt for an elusive two-game win streak. Jamaal Tinsley will likely make his Grizzlies debut, while Hasheem Thabeet will likely return for his first game since fracturing his jaw on Zach Randolph’s head. The fun begins in about 20 minutes. As always this season, I’ll send out the occasional tweet and will be happy to try to respond to comments here if anyone has any during the game.

Check back later tonight (or in the morning) for a full post-game report.

Let’s do this.

Though Shelton Clothiers generally is a men’s suiting store, they will host their second women’s custom suit event TOMORROW from 5 – 9 p.m. Suits are available from $695 to $895 and pieces include custom jackets, pants, and skirts. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served, and for every suit you buy, you’ll get a $150 gift certificate.

The newest store from Divine Rags is The White Horse at the Avenue Carriage Crossing in Collierville. The White Horse’s Grand Splash is this Saturday, November 21st. If you go in before then, you will get 10 percent off, and I believe there will be specials Saturday, as well.

While not technically clothing related, I also want to mention MCA’s 60th Annual Holiday Bazaar this Friday, November 20th, from 6 – 9 p.m., and Saturday, November 21st, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Bazaar features food, cash bar, photos with Santa and his elves, and original artwork by MCA students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Also, the Flyer’s next Work It Wednesday event will be held at the Beauty Shop in Cooper Young December 2nd. Specials include 10 percent off all menu items, $5 house wine, and $2.50 domestic beer.

Preacher’s Sons Screens at First Congo

In the documentary Preacher’s Sons, a camera crew follows a gay male couple and their five adopted teens over the course of five years. Greg and Stillman, partners for over 25 years, took in the boys, effectively rescuing from the foster care system.

During the time of filming, liberal minister Greg’s job leads his family on the road from their home in Los Angeles to America’s conservative heartland. Middle America turns out to be a sometimes-hostile environment for the preacher’s new family.

See what happens as the film screens at The Pilgrim Center at First Congregational Church on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.

Cirque Jerk: My love/hate relationship with Holidaze

    Princess Mongo Halloran

    • Princess Mongo Halloran

I must confess I missed the opening moments of Cirque Dreams: Holidaze because I was staring in slackjawed wonder at Orpheum CEO Pat Halloran‘s program note.

“It is often said that people always resemble or look like their dogs,” Halloran wrote in an off-topic and weirdly redundant intro to what was, ostensibly, an acknowledgement of his 29-years as President of the Memphis Development Foundation. “If that is the truth, then I must look like Princess Mongo,” he concluded before bragging about the 150 Broadway shows, thousands of concerts, and countless other performances that have brought 10-million people through the Orpheum’s doors. In the top right hand corner of the page there was a photo of a goggle-wearing pooch, presumably Princess Mongo standing in for her master. By the time I looked up there was already some guy on stage juggling devil sticks about as well as some of the red-eyed hippies I’ve seen in Overton Park on 4/20. I thought about staring at my program some more, then quickly put it away to avoid the temptation.

I have mixed emotions about the evolution of the modern circus. In theory I should like all the innovation that’s taken place since the 1980’s when a struggling Canadian company called Cirque du Soleil changed things forever.

The Stupidest Story You’ll Read Today

    cameron_02.jpg

One of my regular stops on the Internet trail is at Professor Hex‘s blog. The professor calls himself a “scholar of the strange and mysterious,” and his site mainly consists of links to news accounts and stories on the web about flying saucers, bigfoot, ghosts, and other paranormal subjects.

Most of the links are interesting if you are intriqued, as I am, by weird stuff. But today, well, the ol’ professor linked to one of the dumbest stories I’ve ever seen. It’s a hilarious report by a Minnesota television station on some locals whose brooms stand up by themselves — as in they don’t fall over when you stand them upright. The report is mind-bogglingly stupid faux journalism, the kind that is rampant all over the country, particularly in small markets. The formula is as follows: Raise a ridiculous question — in this case, “Standing Brooms: Is it spirits? Is it science? Is it simply the style of the brooms?” — then find “experts” to talk about it, i.e. a physics professor and a “pyschic.” Simply hilarious. Trust me.

    Picture_1.png

And what’s even more hilarious is that it turns out that this “phenomenon” is happening all over the country. How do I know? I googled “standing brooms.” Check out the headlines from local television “reports” from around the country: “Brooms Standing Up: Planets Aligning?”; “Magical Standing Broom Stuns Alabama Town”; “Standing Broom: Is It Paranormal?”.

I love America. I can’t wait to go home and stand up my broom. Then I’m calling Fox 13.

    Grizzlies-Clippers Pre-Game Three-Pointer

Grizzlies-Clippers: Two storied franchises face off in a bitter grudge match.

    • Grizzlies-Clippers: Two storied franchises face off in a bitter grudge match.

    1. One to Get: The Grizzlies finally got a win Saturday over the Minnesota Timberwolves after a demoralizing seven-game losing streak. That was a game the Grizzlies were in good position to win, and so is this one. A win streak — even only two games — would do this team a lot of good.

The Clippers have lost four of five games since beating the Grizzlies 113-110 in Los Angeles November 7th and are now playing not only without top pick Blake Griffin but second-year emerging star Eric Gordon, who is out with a groin injury. The Clippers come into FedExForum — much like the Wolves did — on the second night of a back-to-back set, having lost 110-102 to the New Orleans Hornets last night. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have had three days rest and have had a chance to start putting the Allen Iverson distraction behind them.

The Grizzlies played the Clippers well in Los Angeles — the team’s first game following Iverson’s butt-soreness-prompting departure — building a slim lead midway through the fourth quarter but executing poorly down the stretch (a previously hot Rudy Gay forcing too many shots). Gay had a three-point look to tie at the buzzer, but missed (and foot was on the line anyway). Tonight the Grizzlies get to make up for one that got away.
