Willie Kemp Reborn

Few college basketball players would voluntarily follow the career arc Willie Kemp has at the University of Memphis. (Actually, you’d need to turn an arc upside down to track Kemp’s three-plus years as a Tiger.) If there’s a metaphorical roar to this first season of the Josh Pastner Era, it’s source is likely the senior point guard — starting point guard — from Bolivar, Tennessee.

  • Willie Kemp during the 2009 NCAAs

As a freshman, Kemp started 36 games for the 2006-07 Tigers. He averaged 21 minutes of playing time for a team that won 33 games, a Conference USA championship, and reached the NCAA tournament’s Elite Eight. But with the arrival of Derrick Rose the next season and Tyreke Evans for 2008-09, Kemp’s role diminished significantly. He played in 76 games over the last two seasons, but only started two and averaged 13 minutes of playing time. The most telling reflections of Kemp’s decline are his shooting percentages as a junior: 28 percent from the field, 26 percent from three-point range. Gone with his shooting touch, apparently, was any semblance of confidence.

Anybody Recognize This Place?

PolynesianRestaurant.jpg

I recently found, and purchased, a packet of 8×10 color photos at a local estate sale. The original owner/photographer must have been an architect, because most of them showed residential interiors. And then there was this one.

Does anyone recognize the place?

My first thought was that — finally! — I had turned up an interior shot of the Luau, but I’ve already had a few people (those lucky souls invited to the Lauderdale Mansion on the weekends for our badminton tournaments) who said this was NOT the Luau.

I’m not entirely sure it was even taken in Memphis, though everything else at this particular sale was Memphis-related. Was there another Polynesian/Tropical-themed restaurant in this area?

Inquiring minds want to know. And so do I.

Griz-Bucks Game Post

Alright. I’m courtside at FedExForum where the Grizzlies are getting ready to take on the Milwaukee Bucks. Really looking forward to this one: The Grizzlies have won three in a row and played really well in Philly last night. Meanwhile, the Bucks show up with Brandon Jennings, the rookie who has become one of the most exciting players in the Association a mere 10 games to career and has been carrying my Grizzlies.com fantasy team.

Tonight’s game is not televised locally (except, I guess, on League Pass) so follow my tweets for color commentary and feel free to drop into the comments thread here with any questions, rants, or astute analysis.

I’ll have a post-game report sometime: Might be later tonight. Might not be until tomorrow.

Let’s do this.
